In a perennial classic in the Zeek household, Barney’s Day at the Beach, young Amy is unsure about swimming in the backyard pool. Guest star Sandy Duncan sings her a little song entitled “Amy’s Getting in the Water” (or something similar) that goes a little like:
She waded in the water and she got her feet all wet
She waded in the water and she got her feet all wet
She waded in the water and she got her feet all wet
But she didn’t get her bathing suit wet…yet.
You see, the crux of the matter, is that Amy is unprepared emotionally to jump right into the deep end as it were (proverbial here as we are talking about a kiddie pool filled by a garden hose). So she negates that unpreparedness by getting wet in infinitesimal increments.
This is how I am approaching opera.

Whatever it takes. Even if it's a Barney step. We'll make you a Fleming Flapper yet. (after all, you can't hide the fact that you already had her on your ipod even if it was in covering musical theatre)
Pretty soon you'll be running and jumping into the deep end!
