I'll take British and Mysterious for $400 please, Alex...

Things, in no order whatsoever, that are currently making my heart flutter and my summer shiny:

1. Miss Flavia de Luce (The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie and The Weed that Strings the Hangman's Bag by Alan Bradley): mystery solver, aspiring chemist, poison aficionado, 11-year old. Two books of the series are out so far and I recommend both without hesitation. I picked up the first book some time ago, solely based on the delicious cover style and was not disappointed. The second installment was also a treat and I am looking very forward to the third. Lovely and sometimes heart-wrenching, also extremely sassy. All of which suits me just fine.2. Mary Russell (Beekeeper's Apprentice, Monstrous Regiment of Women, A Letter of Mary, The Moor, O, Jerusalem, Justice Hall, The Game, Locked Rooms, The Language of Bees, God of the Hive by Laurie R. King): This series was recommended by a fellow Dorothy L. Sayers nut and yes, Lord Peter Wimsey makes an uncharacteristic appearance in A Letter of Mary. But it turns out that no LPW is needed - these books are enjoyable on their own. The mysteries are very interesting and Mary isn't Holmes' apprentice for nothing - there's lots of action, enviable brain-usage (gah! so smart, so smart!), and just enough danger to keep things really exciting. O, Jerusalem was a little slow but Locked Rooms made up for it. And I haven't read the last two yet, they're on the list!3. Miss Marple/Tommy and Tuppence (The Secret Adversary, Partners in Crime, N or M?, By The Pricking of My Thumbs, Postern of Fate by Agatha Christie): Miss Marple is certainly not a new addition to things that I love but the Roommate finally got all three of the Masterpiece Mystery Geraldine McEwan seasons on DVD so we've been having a re-watch. Her favorite? At Bertram's Hotel. Mine? By the Pricking of My Thumbs. I have also begun to read Agatha Christie - I am currently making my way, chronologically, through the Tommy and Tuppence books of which I cannot get enough! Added to the list of characteristics that I look for in a mate? Mystery solving ability.4. Foyle's War: Speaking of things that I just can't get enough of...a friend at work suggested this to me and lent me Season 1. I have not been able to stop watching (and re-watching!) that and the following six seasons. Christopher Foyle is a police detective (Detective Chief Superintendent, maybe? I have no idea...crazy British system) during WWII so each episode features a crime or two but also delves into some aspect of wartime Britain. So wonderful and I can't get enough of the terribly moral Foyle although I do also love his driver and sometime assistant, Samantha Stewart, who gets blown up more times than I can count. Also featuring some fantastic costumes and yes, even a snood! Be still my heart.
